Tharros was built in the extreme south side of the Peninsula of the Sinis; the city was probably founded at the end of the VIII century a.D. by phoenicians
on an area already used in the nuraghic period.
Of the phoenicians period it's not known the habitated area, it has been left only few vestigeses of the
funeral and votive field.
On the second half of the VI century, time of big changes for the Carthage's expansionism, some part of the Sardinia and Tharros in particular didn't escape to the occupation by the african city; the chamber shape graves digged in the rock of San Marco Cape and further north close to the San Giovanni of Sinis town are of punic time.
From this period on the city started its building expansionism.
San Salvatore's church has been built towards the end of the XVIII century; of big value its hypogeum, that it's possibile to visit going down a little stair inside the little church.
On the wall various immages, writings and scenes of different subject as boats, two lions and different women immages.
For sure the building was built in the pagan time and used as "Catacomba", jail and space for refugees in christian time.
It has probably been used as christian church in the IV century
and it's quite sure that the central well was used as baptistery.
In the town, all years, for the firt sunday of september, you can assist to the traditional procession knowed as "Corsa degli Scalzi" (run of barefoots).
